The book found hidden away

The Book Of Deer is an illuminated manuscript, from the 9th century. It was made at Deer Abbey in what is now Scotland. It is the new testament, with some Gospels. It was found in a University library in 1860.(Encyclopedia Britannica), This is an important discovery because it is the oldest Gospel book from a Scottish Provence. The scribe who wrote the book was also thought to be the artist as well.(Oxford Art Online)

  1. I wonder how long it was in the library before someone knew of its importance. Where was the book before that.

  2. I find it kind of funny how it could be tucked away for so long before being identified as such an important document. Kind of makes you wonder if there's any hidden historical gems in Olin.... yeah, probably not.

    1. I beg to differ! We have some of the Nuremberg Chronicle, and an imp. 14th century Psalter. Perhaps we should visit at the end of the year?

  3. Abbigail, I loved reading about the manuscript that was found in Scotland. The Gospel book. The picture of the book was also a good image to represent the book. Good response!

  4. This is very interesting because I don't think I have ever heard of the Book of Deer. With the Book of Kells being so popular maybe we don't hear about this one very much. Also, I find it intriguing that it took forever to find the book. This might relate to how it was overlooked in its time.

    1. I think the Book of Kells "wins" on a number of counts--vibrate colors, Celtic knot work, etc. But it is true what is a treasure is in the eye of the finder. Many important works have only been recently discovered or deemed important, for instance a set of writings by the author Christine de Pisan.

  5. Enjoyable post. It's interesting to compare this work to something like the Book of Kells. The latter work is a bit more impressive, but it is fascinating that this work was recorded and illustrated by a single person. It would be interesting if we could estimate how long creating this work took.

  6. That is very interesting. It is less decorated than other gospel manuscripts. How interesting that it was found at a University library. Out of curiosity, what university was it found at?

  7. Crazy to think that such an important book was just pushed to the side in a library and just forgotten about. I wonder why it went missing and where people thought it might have been?
