Lets Dig Into the History of the Heavy Plough

Ah the Heavy Plough, an back saving implement of epic proportions. This implement was controlled by the farmer, and driven by two Horses or Oxen. It enabled the farmer to till and work the soil far faster than they would ever achieve through hand tools. It enabled farmers to create better fields faster than ever known before.

As seen to the right the Plough is composed of a wooden frame with a metal blade used to cut into and part the soil with the V shape helping to push the soil apart and create a ditch used for irrigation and planting. Doing this with a shovel or a similar implement on the same scale would be very difficult. It was this Plough that helped produce more food for the rising populace of Europe

  1. This was the most important tool the farmer could have owned i would imagine. With this invention farmers could go from barely having enough food to being able to sell surplus at market.

  3. The heavy plough really was a major invention as it sparked revolutionary farming ideas. This ultimately increased food production at such a rate that it led to the development of many medieval cities! I understand why the heavy plough was included in the Luttrell Psalter, seeing as it would have been a very important aspect of everyday life.
