Come smell the sights of Cologne Cathedral

Once one of the tallest structures in the world the Cologne Cathedral. Larger than a soccer field and the now the 2nd tallest structure in the city after the radio tower (Official Tourism Website). This cathedral was first constructed in 1248 but was only finished in 1880. The sheer amount of time it took to finish this building is demonstrative of the significance that cathedrals held to the community.

Viewing the pictures available on the it is clearly evident just the sheer amount of craftsmanship and care that went into this construction. The UNESCO website claiming it to be a Gothic Masterpiece, and I agree.

The Sheer amount of arches and decor on this building is awe inspiring.

  1. I really like how you detailed just how big this structure really is. I think it’s easy to lose track of the great dimensions these Cathedral’s have. What decor is on the building?

  2. I find it really cool how they were able to work for that long on a structure and never give up. over 600 years of construction is a long time!

  3. It's crazy how long these cathedrals took to be built. 600 plus years to build is amazing and crazy to think how many generations of family worked on this project. Based on the images though it was worth it because it's a true treasure of the Gothic style.

  4. I found it incredible that buildings were able to have such a large amount of detail. Did architects of the time use blueprints in the same ways we do today? How was it decided that structure would take so long to build, or was it more of an accident? Did the same plans stick around from the time this was started to the time is was finished?

  5. I admire the severe dedication it took to having to take over 600 years to build one of the tallest cathedrals in the world. Makes me appreciate those who work on the cathedrals more.

  6. This post really relates to the cathedral architecture we have been discussing in class. The Cologne Cathedral really displays the popularity of creating these cathedrals that were stretching towards Heaven and appearing large and imposing.
