University of Bologna

The University of Bologna is one of the oldest universities in all of Europe. It was founded in the 11th
century as a school of canon and civil law. This mostly attracted men who already filled positions of law
in the state or church. These were the school's only available studies until around the 13th century. It
was around then when medicine and philosophy were introduced.
An interesting fact about the University of Bologna was that it originally did not have its own building.
Lessons would be held in the houses of the professors or rooms rented for them. A main point of
gathering for the students of the university was the San Procolo’s church. Other churches found in
San Francesco and San Domenico were also points of reference for students. The University of Bologna
would finally get its own building in the 16th century.

  1. I have heard of this University before this blog, but I did not know that the only available studies were for men who had positions in the state or church. The fact about the University not having its own building is very interesting. Just imagine if Drury didn’t have its own building! Good job Drew.

  2. I find it cool that the original classes were held outside, this just shows that the simplest setting can allow for people to learn in. Also it will tell you who really cares about learning, because if you really care then you will go where you have the opportunity to learn. This is show by the University of Bologna being one of the oldest i all of Europe

  4. It's interesting to think about students going to professors houses for lectures. That would be interesting in today's time. I was surprised how long it took the University of Bologna to get an actual buildings.

    1. During our orientation this year, we actually visited a faculty members house and it was honestly incredibly weird. I wonder if it was more of a norm because university was a little less age specific in this time, or maybe the time period in general was less divided by age.

  5. University of Bologna struck me as a very interesting name. I wonder what the origins of this are, I can't imagine its referring to the lunch meat.

  6. Interesting post. I have been there multiple times because some of my friends study there and it is just like the picture shows. It is interesting to know that once it was just a "law" school while now it focuses on different field studies. It is curious that students did not have to go to class to follow the lesson but they had to go to their professor's house.
